A pile of bagged Marvel comics under the headline Marvel Unlimited is ending

Marvel Unlimited Is Ending: How to Read and Own Marvel Comics Now

Maybe you opened Marvel Unlimited and saw the banner. Maybe you tried to sign up this month and got turned away. Either way, the app a lot of us read Marvel comics on is going away, and its replacement is another subscription, on a new app, run with a new partner.

Plenty of readers will move over and be fine. But if you'd rather own the handful of series you love than rent a whole library, this guide is for you. Here's what's changing, how to keep reading for free while you sort it out, and how to own the Marvel comics you actually care about.

Key takeaways

  • Marvel Unlimited closed to new members on 5 October 2026. Reading in the old app stops on 7 December.
  • The new Marvel Comics app, built with WEBTOON, opens 16 November at $9.99 or $12.49 a month. Your library can move over.
  • Subscriptions rent you a library. When the app changes, your shelf changes with it.
  • You can read Marvel comics free through your library's Hoopla app and Marvel's own free issues.
  • To keep specific issues, buy them: print, Kindle, or VeVe Comics, where your first comic is free.

What's happening to Marvel Unlimited

Date What happens
5 Oct 2026 Marvel Unlimited stopped taking new sign-ups.
16 Nov 2026 The new Marvel Comics app opens. You can import your library, reading progress and saved issues.
7 Dec 2026 No new comics are added, and you can no longer read in the old app.
21 Dec 2026 Browsing your old library ends.
28 Dec 2026 The Marvel Unlimited app is removed.

If you're a current subscriber, the practical steps are short. Move your library into the new app between 16 November and 7 December, and watch for your pro-rated refund. If you pay through Apple or Google, billing runs through them, not Marvel. Marvel's sunset FAQ has the full details.

The new app has two tiers. Base is $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year, with new issues arriving at least three months after print. Ultimate is $12.49 a month or $99.99 a year, with new issues 30 days after print. The library starts at more than 35,000 titles.

Why the comics app keeps changing on you

This isn't the first time. In early 2023, Amazon folded ComiXology into the Kindle app and retired the standalone store. Purchased comics carried over, but readers lost the comics-first app they'd built their habits around. Now Marvel Unlimited is doing the same thing in a different shape.

That's the trade with a subscription. You get a large library for one monthly price, and you keep nothing. When the service changes, your shelf changes with it. Some readers love that deal. If you read ten or more issues a month, it's hard to beat.

Owning works the other way. You pay for each issue and read less for the money, but the comics you care about stay in your collection. Even then, digital ownership depends on the store that sold it to you staying around, which is why some readers will only buy print. It's worth knowing which kind of reader you are before you pick a new app.

Can't sign up right now? Read Marvel comics free

Marvel Unlimited stopped taking new members on 5 October, and the new app doesn't open until 16 November. If you're new to comics, or just got locked out, here are three ways to read before then.

  • Your library. Many public libraries lend Marvel collections through the Hoopla app. Sign in with your library card and borrow them like an ebook. What's available depends on your library.
  • Marvel.com. Marvel posts a set of free issues to read on its own site, no subscription needed.
  • A free comic on VeVe. New VeVe users get one free digital comic or collectible to keep. More on that below.

Where VeVe Comics fits, and where it doesn't

VeVe is a licensed digital collecting app. Marvel licenses its comics to VeVe, and VeVe sells them one issue at a time, to read in the app, with no subscription. The week of 21 October, VeVe listed 12 new Marvel issues for release, from Uncanny X-Men #37 to Miles Morales: Spider-Man #3.

The VeVe Comics reader app shown on two phones

VeVe sells two kinds of comic. Reading editions of new issues usually cost $4.99 to $5.99. Limited collectible editions, with numbered copies and VeVe-only covers, usually cost $6.99, and you can trade them with other collectors on VeVe's market.

VeVe isn't all-you-can-read. If you burn through a stack of issues every month, the new Marvel app is the better deal. Where VeVe fits is the two or three series you'd want on your shelf. Reading editions stay in your account. Limited editions carry an edition number and can be listed for sale on VeVe's market later if you change your mind (a market fee applies).

A few things to know before you start:

  • Gems. VeVe uses an in-app currency called Gems. One Gem equals $1, and you use Gems to buy comics and collectibles in the app.
  • Nobody has said what happens after the switch. As of late October, VeVe still lists new Marvel issues. Neither Marvel nor VeVe has said whether that continues once the new app launches.
  • What "own" means on VeVe. VeVe holds your comics and collectibles for you inside the app, and every one of them is recorded on a blockchain. Since April 2026 that's Collect Chain, with a public explorer (collectscan.com) where anyone can see ownership and transaction history. What you can't do yet is move a piece out of the VeVe app into a wallet you control. VeVe has called that "phase two" of the Collect Chain rollout, and as of this writing it isn't available.

If you want the long version, I compared VeVe with Marvel Unlimited, DC Universe Infinite and WEBTOON in why collectors use VeVe.

Start your Marvel collection on VeVe

If there are two or three Marvel series you'd want on your shelf, VeVe lets you own them on release day with no subscription. New users get a free digital comic or collectible, so the easiest way to see if it fits is to pick a series you already follow and start there.
